Only in the 19th century did soldiers begin to describe their experiences in language modern readers can relate to.

Wheeler served as a rifleman through the greatest British campaigns of the Napoleonic wars. His letters home were discovered and published only in They provide one of the finest accounts of the conflict from the perspective of a ranker.

Wheeler's sensibilities were often outraged by the scenes he witnessed, not least the excesses committed by his own comrades. Published by Cassell.

This was the best book Churchill wrote, an exuberant memoir of colonial wars as seen by a shameless adventurer and glory-seeker, such as every conflict produces its share of.

Yet while the author rejoiced in his own part in the campaigns which made his name - the north-west frontier of India, Kitchener's march on Khartoum, the Boer war - he also displayed a sympathy for the victims, for instance the untended Dervish wounded after the battle of Omdurman, which was remarkably enlightened for a man of his age and social caste.

Manning was an Australian aspiring intellectual, already in his mids when he enlisted as a private soldier in His prewar existence in England was dogged by unfulfilled literary hopes and emotional confusions.

He served for only a few months in France, and his military career ended in alcoholism and disgrace. But in he composed a novel, obviously autobiographical, about three soldiers' experience of the trench nightmare, which is outstanding.

Almost certainly the finest work of its kind to emerge from the war. A novel that many soldiers who fought in the second Vietnam War read with in some cases doomed recognition.

Restless is equally superb. It focuses on a Russian woman who is recruited to work for the British Secret Service during World War II and who falls for her boss, who ultimately betrays her.

War is the backdrop, but the misery that unfolds can be traced back to the conflict of ideologies and fighting. Within that there are manifold stories to be told, primarily of course the titular protagonist, but the threat and reality of war is always close to the surface.

As the war progresses, and James becomes more cognizant of the reality of war, his feelings develop, and life becomes a struggle for survival.

The confusion inherent in war is never far from the surface in this compelling book. The Cold War was a metaphorical battle in which the combatants never met directly, instead engaging in phoney wars; conflicts of propaganda and taking sides in other wars like Vietnam.

Can Ryan safely deliver a defecting Soviet submarine captain to American waters? What do you think? An inflammatory set of novels that strike at the heart of the callous nature of war.

Briggs deals in acute gallows humour, not shying away from the consequences of nuclear fallout and public misinformation. Not a novel , but a vital account of the Spanish Civil War; a struggle that Orwell engaged in first-hand.

Or so he thought: his account of this fight also demonstrates the internecine conflict that so ravaged the left, and enabled Franco to gain an upper hand.

James Salter is one of the unsung heroes of American literature — writers like Saul Bellow, Joseph Heller and Philip Roth have all waxed lyrical about his literary chops, and yet he remains an enigmatic figure.

A harrowing book that expertly pricks the pomposity of those that send innocent people to die for their causes. It examines the lot of Guy Crouchback, a year-old divorced Catholic who, as World War II, commences is clearly unhappy with his lot in life.

War, he believes, can give meaning to his life once more. World War I, or the Great War, was meant to be the war that ended all wars.

The central figure is Christopher Tietjens, an old school chap attached to a code about to be blown to smithereens.

The war tears everything he thought stable asunder. What gets individuals through war? What sustains them? Or the promise of love at least.

When W. Inman sees through the illusory concept of the Confederacy in the American Civil War and deserts, he heads back to the woman — and the home — he loves.

James Jones was a master of the war novel — we could have easily plumped for The Thin Red Line here instead.

James Jones was a master of the war novel — we could have easily plumped for The Thin Red Line here instead. As Jones realises, being an ex-soldier himself, sometimes the biggest adversary in wartime is on your own side.

Taking in everything from the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in — and the resultant decade-long conflict and flight of refugees to Pakistan, Iran and the US — to the subsequent rise of the Taliban, The Kite Runner is a thoroughly modern examination of warfare on individuals, societies and nations.

I don't know. I didn't start this list. I wanted to add the books in my post but didn't know how to do that either. Mar 30, PM.

You add books to the list in the upper right corner. Apr 01, PM. I started the list to get book ideas. I intially thought it would be a list of books more akin to personal memoirs like Grant's, Caputo's and Grave's.

But folks have added more history-type books, which is great. Many thanks - keep them coming. Feb 22, PM. They are good, but not in the proper category.

That explains the Civil War in a nutshell. Maybe we want to divide this list into separate wars It might be easier to order my choices. I have a 1 favorite for WWII, but that means another one would have to be 2 even if it is my 1 favorite book about the Vietnam war.

There's plenty of scope there for new lists, if you want to start them, Lisa. It's pretty easy to start a new list. To true. Mar 14, AM.

Jul 21, PM. Jul 22, AM. You could vote for it. Jul 22, PM. I tried to add books but there was no 'Save' button or any other means of leaving the page which meant they were not added - a waste of effort.

Um, you don't hit a "save" button; you can either vote for a book that's already on the list, by clicking "vote for this book" in the information under its title, or go to "add books to this list," where you can perform a general search or choose books from your own bookshelves.

If you do the latter, the "vote for this book" button is to the right of the book's title. A list of the books you have voted for will appear to the right of the page.

Jul 23, AM. Thanks Susanna - no point me having my own nerdy little list Uh, "your list" is added to the main list.

All votes go to the main list. Mar 12, PM. Indeed it is; I'll remove it. Nov 02, AM. And it is fiction. Should not be on this list.

It doesn't look as if this page has seen much traffic recently, but I like it, and I also found a duplicate Sherman's Memoirs , which I removed, along with 4 other unnamed duplicates that the system said had been taken out I asked it to search for duplicates.

Thank you to the many individuals who added thoughtful selections, esp. Jun 14, PM. Donna, there are both valid an invalid complaints on every list.

Well, of course there are valid complaints too. I'll see if I can find the link you mentioned and zap those.

Obviously they are just misplaced But my main point was to express my appreciation for the good stuff that people added and that I think did me some good.

Was sorely tempted to remove Little Women, but since there was a Little Men at some point I didn't dare. Librarians are held strictly accountable, so when in doubt, I leave it alone.

I am not an employee, just one of many volunteers, but I signed on because I really hate seeing misplaced books in listopia.

Three Musketeers is part of a series, though. The only series of which I can find it to be considered a part is the complete works of Dumas, which does not qualify for our purposes.

I will be away from the site for a few days on personal business. If you want other titles removed, I am sure someone can help, or you can apply to be a Goodreads librarian.

Jun 15, AM. I'm already a Goodreads librarian, but I don't delete things. As for Three Musketeers, those that I mentioned on the other page are, in fact, part of the Musketeer series.

Collectively, the three books are known as The d'Artagnan Romances. Sep 15, PM. Battle Cry is a work of Fiction and should not be on this list.

Sep 24, AM. The Yellow Birds, currently ranked at joint , is fiction. Oct 17, PM. Why is Undaunted Courage on this list? They were out exploring.

If yes, I don't remember that part. May 29, PM. Nov 22, PM. Thanks JohnNY! Sep 02, PM. The system found and removed 1 duplicate.
